영문학사상 18세기는 전통적인 산문설화(Prose Narrative)가 현대적 의미의 소설(The Novel)이라는 문학 양식으로 등장한 시기라고 할 수 있다. 이같은 사실을 중시하여 D. Defoe, J. Swift, S. Richardson, H. Fielding, T. Smollet, L. Stern등의 주요작품을 통하여 소설의 발생사적 의미와 그 구성적 요소를 분석 연구한다.

Wycherley, Dryden, Congreve, Sheridan, Goldsmith 등의 작품을 연구한다.

19세기의 주요 미국작가인 Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Henry James, Steven Crane 등의 작품 가운데 매학기 주요 작품을 선정하여 집중적으로 논의한다. 작가 및 작품에 대한 간략한 설명과 함께 수업에 적극적인 참여를 도모하기 위하여 토론 위주의 방식을 지향하여 가급적 다양한 자료를 사용한다.

20세기의 대표적 미국소설을 주요사조와 관련하여 해석함으로써 개별 작품과 그 배경에 대한 이해를 도모한다. 주요작가로는 Sherwood Anderson, Edith Wharton, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Saul Bellow, John Updike 등이며 강의 진행은 세미나 형식을 택하여 학생들의 참여를 고취시킨다.

Joseph Conrad, E. M. Forster, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence 등과 같은 20세기 초반의 대표적인 영국작가와 작품을 선정하여 주제와 기법면에서 20세기적 세계관과 문학관을 파악 연구한다. 특히 20세기 초반의 이른바 모더니즘적 문학관이 어떻게 나타나고 있는가를 중심적으로 연구한다.

20세기 초반기의 이른바 모더니즘적 세계관과 인간관을 보여주는 문학 작품들을 비교, 분석함으로써 20세기 영국소설의 주요 성격과 흐름을 연구한다.

이 과목의 목표는 1890년대에서 시작하여 1940년대에 걸쳐 영국시의 중요한 혁신적인 시운동의 흐름과 이러한 시운동을 주도한 주요시인들의 작품을 사회적, 문화적 배경에서 이해하고 연구하는데 있다. 20세기 초반의 가장 혁명적인 시운동은 프랑스 19세기 후반의 시인들의 영향을 받아 나타난 모더니즘에 있을 것이다. W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot등의 모더니스트를 이해하기 위해 프랑스의 Symbolist인 Baudelaire, Mallarme, Laforgue 등의 연구가 선행되어야 할 것이다. 수업은 강의와 수강생의 발표 및 토론으로 진행된다.

20세기 후반의 영국시를 대상으로 하되 대표적인 시인 Philip Larkin, Ted Hughes 및 Seamus Heaney를 집중 연구하고 Thomas Hardy적인 전통과 Modernism적인 전통을 관련시키면서 Postmodernism적인 Topic도 아울러 고려해 본다.

18세기 후반부터 시작된 영국 낭만주의 문학운동을 역사적으로 규명하고 그 바탕위에서 대표적인 낭만주의 시인들의 작품을 연구한다.

영어영문학과 이 강좌는 최근의 서구 유럽과 북미 문화이론의 주된 흐름을 비판적으로 소개하는 것을 일차적인 목표로 삼는다. 여기서 '비판적'이라 함은 문화가 작동하는 방식에 대해 강의에 참여하는 모든 사람들의 다양한 기준에 비추어 최근의 서구 문화이론을 재단한다는 뜻이 될 것이다. 아울러 이 강좌의 두 번째 목표는 문화적 실천으로서의 문학텍스트 읽기이다. 다양한 갈래로 발전해온 문화이론은 이러한 읽기를 위한 훌륭한 자원으로 사용될 것이다. 문화인류학과 “문화”나 “구조”에 대한 이론 형성에 기여하거나 영향을 준 여러가지 사상이나 학파, 중요한 인물, 그리고 핵심적이자 주요한 개념을 소개하면서 문화에 대한 이해를 돕는 동시에 스스로 문화에 대한 연구를 할 수 있는 능력을 배양시킨다.

미국시는 오랜 전통을 가진 영구시의 전통속에서 발전하여 이미 19세기 중반에 와서 Walt Hitman, Emily Dickinson 같은 미국적인 경험에 기초를 둔 새로운 전통을 수립하는 시인들을 배출하였고, 또 그들은 미국의 현대시를 창출하게 한 기초가 되었다. 이 Course는 20세기 초반의 다양한 미국적인 경험의 실험적인 방법으로 다양하게 표출되어 나타난 미국시의 Modernism에 촛점을 두고 이루어지며, 그 대표적인 시인들로는 E. A. Robinson, Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, H. D. Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane 등으로, 그들 대표작의 연구를 통해 시의 특징을 찾아보는데 있다.

서구 여러 국가의 문학의 특징과 영미 문학의 특징을 비교 분석하며, 그 영향 관계를 고찰하고, 또한 그 비교 방법론을 연구한다. 그래서 문학 연구의 공시성과 통시성을 폭넓게 고찰한다.

Renaissance시기 영국에서 연극이 대중적 오락문화의 핵심으로 자리잡게된 문화, 사회, 경제적 배경을 광범위하게 검토하고 그것과 관련해서 Shakespeare의 비극과 희극에 담겨있는 문화적 특성을 논한다.

어린아이의 언어습득 및 개발과정과 심리적 제 문제에 언어이론을 도입하는 심리행위와 언어행위의 상호관계를 연구 검토한다.
[B03095] 영미문학비평이론 THEORIES OF ENGLISH AND AMERICAN LITERARY CRITICISM (3(3))
문학과 이데올로기의 관계가 가장 중요한 연구주제가 될 것이다. 현대의 서구 마르크시스트 진영에서 개발하여 유통시키고 있는 이데올로기 이론은 소위‘탈근대’라고 지칭되는 우리 시대의 가장 중요한 문화 연구방법론으로 중요성을 인정받고 있다. 그 이데올로기론에 따르면 문학은 다름 아닌 “이데올로기적 형상물(형상)”이다. 여기서 우리는 질문을 하나 제기할 수 있다. ‘그렇다면 문학과 이데올로기적 내용의 관계는 무엇인가?’ 그리고 이 질문은 우리 세미나의 제목인 ‘학과 이데올로기’의 관계에 대한‘해체론적’고찰로 이어지게 된다. 서구의 현대 마르크시즘이 내린 문학에 대한 정의와 지금 우리가 던진 질문은 이번 세미나의 전체적인 윤곽을 형성할 것이다.

버나드 쇼 이후의 현대 영미 희곡 작가들의 대표적인 작품을 공부한다. 학부에서 희곡 수업이 많지 않았던 점을 감안해서 될수 있는대로 여러 작품을 읽어 희곡 문학에 익숙해지도록 한다. 아울러 현대 서양 희곡의 사조를 정리한다.

현대 영미희곡에서 특별한 이슈가 되는 작가와 작품을 집중적으로 다룬다. 특히 표현주의, 부조리극, 서사극 등 반아리스토텔레스적인 연극의 이해에 중점을 둔다.

생성문법의 최근 이론하에서 이론적으로 흥미 있는 몇 가지 이론적 제안들을 중점적으로 연구 검토한다. 본 과목의 목적은 한가지 통사현상에 대한 다양한 이론을 비교. 검토해 봄으로써, 통사이론에 대한 이해력과 비판력을 키우고, 논문을 쓸 수 있는 능력을 키우는데 있다.

본 과목에서는 (영어의) 의미와 관련된 이론들과 이론안에서 제안되는 다양한 개념들을 다룬다. 생성문법이론하에서는 의미를 통사적으로 설명되는 의미와 비통사적으로 (어휘적으로) 설명되는 의미로 크게 나누는데, 각각의 의미의 성격과 그에 따른 다양한 이론적 입장을 다룬다.

영어의미론에서 다룬 의미론의 다양한 이론적 관점 중 최근 언어학적으로 가장 흥미롭게 대두되는 관점들을 다루고, 그 관점들하에서 언어학적으로 어떤 중요한 Issue들이 있는가를 최근 논문들을 읽어가며, 비판 분석해 본다

생성문법 테두리 안에서, 최근 통사이론에서 거론하는 중요하고 특수한 이론적 논점들을 최근의 이론적 발전과 더불어 중점적으로 다룬다. 어려운 이론적인 논점들을 이해하는 능력과 자료를 이론적으로 분석하는 능력을 키우는데 목적을 둔다.

이 과목은 응용언어학 분야의 여러 이론들을 영어 교육에 접목시키는데 특히, 심리언어학적, 담화 화용론적 접근 방식으로 영어교육을 고찰한다. 주요 주제들로는 학습자의 담화능력, 학습자의 화용론적 능력, 구어체 담화, 문어제 담화, 담화 응집성, 담화 일관성, 수사학적 분석, 대화분석, 공손성, 의사소통 이론, 언화행위, 언어기능 등의 이론을 다룬다. 이러한 응용언어학의 이론들이 영어학습자들의 언어수행에 활용될 수 있는 다양한 방안들을 모색한다.

컴퓨터 기술의 발전으로 인해 언어학의 제반 분야에도 이러한 기술을 활용한 연구와 실험이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이 강좌는 전산언어학의 각 분야를 소개하고 이를 언어학의 이론과 실제에 어떻게 적용할 수 있는지를 공부한다.

이 강좌는 단순히 문예사로서의 리얼리즘, 모더니즘, 포스트 모더니즘에 대해 개괄적으로 소개하는 것으로 만족하지 않는다. 다양한 형태의 '포스트'주의의 범람 속에서 문화적 또는 문화적 재현 능력을 어떻게 평가할 것인가 하는 것이 이 강좌의 주된 관심사다. 이러한 목적을 위해 이 강좌는 리얼리즘-모더니즘 그리고 맑스주의-포스트 모더니즘 진영의 고전적인 논쟁뿐만 아니라 비서구 지역의 탈식민 텍스트를 비판적으로 점검할 것이다.

이 과목은 번역의 여러 문제들, 예컨대 번역의 메커니즘, 한국어와 영어 사이의 표현 및 어법의 차이, 관용적 표현, 그리고 번역의 가치와 효용성 등에 관하여 연구한다. 이와 더불어 한국어 또는 영어 문장이나 작품을 각기 상대언어로 번역함으로써 번역의 실제를 탐색한다.

심리언어학과 관련된 특정한 주제를 심도 있게 연구함. 문장분석 책략, 이론과 실제, 구문 형성, 다의성의 문제, 공소범주의 과정, 의미과정 등이 주제로 포함된다. 또한 이 주제와 관련된 많은 이론적이고 실험적인 연구방법이 논의된다.

본 과목에서는 영어를 중심으로 인간발화에 실재하는 음성적 특성의 이해를 목표로 한다. 구체적으로 실험음성학에 초점을 맞추어 기존 연구들을 강독하고 문제점을 포착하여 음성학 연구의 최근 경향을 파악하면서 나아갈 방향을 고찰하고자 한다. 주제별로 실제 실험도 수행하여 일차적인 자료의 확보와 실험 수행 능력의 습득도 도모한다.

본 과목에서는 영어의 음운현상에 대한 이론을 중심으로 최근 음운이론들의 핵심을 이해하고 문제점을 논의함으로써 새로운 음운이론의 방향을 모색해 보고자 한다. 구체적으로 최근 음운론의 주류를 형성하는 저자들의 논문을 강독하면서, 내재하는 문제점을 파악하고 더 나아가 그 문제점을 보완할 수 있는 더 나은 시도를 목표로 한다.

본 과목에서는 영어자료를 중심으로 음운현상의 일반적인 분석에 쓰이는 연구방법의 습득을 목표로 한다. 구체적으로 다음의 세 단계를 수행하는 방법을 연습한다. 첫째, 자료의 일차적 정리 및 기술적 일반화. 둘째, 형태론적으로 연결된 다른 표면형들이 도출되어 나올 수 있는 기저형의 설정. 셋째, 제약 및 규칙을 사용하여 음운현상에 대한 형식적 분석을 제시.

이 과목은 대학원 문학전공자들에게 영미문학에 대한 넓은 시각과 해석 방법을 소개하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 따라서 특정 장르, 작가 및 시대에 국한되지 않고 영미문학 연구에서 제기되는 다양한 문제 가운데 중점적으로 논의되는 부분을 선별하고, 이를 심층적으로 접근하여 영미문학의 본질에 대한 이해를 도모한다.

이 과목은 영어를 효율적으로 지도할 수 있는 다양한 교수법과 학습활동 들을 소개하고 창의적인 교수 학습활동을 고안하는데 주안점을 둔다. 전통적인 교수법에서 의사소통 접근법에 이르기까지 다양한 교수법의 장단점과 특징, 한국적 맥락에서의 적용 가능성 등을 토론하고 역할놀이, 인터뷰, 게임, 토론 등의 학습활동들이 교실 현장에서 효율적으로 활용될 수 있는 접근 방법을 제시한다. 기존의 다양한 학습활동 들을 토대로 하여 한국의 영어 교육 실정에 알맞은 방법들을 창의적으로 고안한다. 영어의 세부 분야인 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기, 어휘, 문법 등 분야에서 현재까지 연구 동향을 살펴보고 지도 방법의 원리를 고찰한다. 뿐만 아니라, 영어로 교안 작성을 하는 방법을 배우며 하나의 교안을 작성하여 시범 강의를 하도록 한다.

영어어휘형성의 다양한 형태에 대해 소개하는 강좌로 단계별 어휘형성과정과 어휘의 내부구조를 이해함으로서 영어어휘에 대한 체계적 이해를 돕는다. 또한 형태소와 이형태의 분포, 굴절과 파생 등의 학습을 통해 영어어휘부가 가진 보편적 언어특징과 독창성을 연구한다.

이 과목은 문장 단위를 넘어서서 담화 문맥 속에서 언어가 어떻게 그리고 왜 사용되는 지를 다루는 과목이다. 화용론의 영역에는 특정 언어적 구조 혹은 패턴이 담화의 구조에 어떤 영향을 미치는 지를 다루는 담화분석, 대화 속에서 대화의 규칙 (화제 전개, 화제 전환, 화제 종결 등)을 발견하려는 대화 분석, 언어의 다양한 기능 (요청, 감사, 사과, 거절 등)을 다루는 언화 행위 등이 포함되며 공손 어법의 다양한 규칙과 패턴도 다룬다.

이 과목은 효율적인 영어 교재 및 학습 자료를 개발하고 연구하는 과목이다. 교재의 구성방식에 따른 다양한 교수요목의 유형을 살펴보고, 교재 연구의 중요한 주제인 요구분석의 절차와 방법을 익힌 후에 요구 분석의 실습을 한다. 또한 이 과목은 교재 개발의 다양한 원리들을 고찰하며, 지금까지 제시된 교재 분석의 다양한 기준들을 토대로 하여 우리나라 중학교, 고등학교, 대학교에서 사용되는 영어교재들을 비평적인 시각에서 분석하고 평가한다. 분석 분야는 학습활동의 유형, 언어및 학습도구의 실제성, 소집단 활동 등 광범위하게 다룬다. 아울러, 이 과목은 주 교재 이외에 수업에서 활용할 수 있는 보조 자료의 샘플도 소개하며 보조 자료의 개발에 대해서도 실습을 한다.

영국과 미국에서 발표되어 비평가들의 관심을 끌었으며 1960년대 이후 페미니즘 비평계의 중요한 화두가 되었던 페미니즘 문학 작품들이 어떤 문학적 해석을 가능하게 하는지 연구하고 최근의 비평적 경향을 살핀다.

이 강좌는 빅토리아 시대의 영국문학을 그 당시의 사회, 문화, 역사, 정치, 경제적 현상과 연관하여 연구한다. 개인의 창작물이지만 동시에 사회의 집단의식을 표현하고 있는 문학작품은 사회와의 연관성 없이 연구하기가 어렵다. 하지만 특히 빅토리아 시대의 문학작품은 당시 사회와 연관성이 두드러진다고 할 수 있다. 이런 점에서 빅토리아시대 영국 사회와 문학을 연관지어 연구할 필요가 있다.

다양한 미디어 번역 텍스트를 실제로 번역하고, 분석한다. 영화 자막이나 텔레비전의 더빙 등의 형식에 따른 번역 방식과 비디오, 다큐멘터리, 만화 영어의 번역 방식도 논의한다.

문학과 이데올로기의 관계가 가장 중요한 연구주제가 될 것이다. 현대의 서구 마르크시스트 진영에서 개발하여 유통시키고 있는 이데올로기 이론은 소위‘탈근대’라고 지칭되는 우리 시대의 가장 중요한 문화 연구방법론으로 중요성을 인정받고 있다. 그 이데올로기론에 따르면 문학은 다름 아닌 “이데올로기적 형상물(형상)”이다. 여기서 우리는 질문을 하나 제기할 수 있다. ‘그렇다면 문학과 이데올로기적 내용의 관계는 무엇인가?’ 그리고 이 질문은 우리 세미나의 제목인 ‘학과 이데올로기’의 관계에 대한‘해체론적’고찰로 이어지게 된다. 서구의 현대 마르크시즘이 내린 문학에 대한 정의와 지금 우리가 던진 질문은 이번 세미나의 전체적인 윤곽을 형성할 것이다.
